Message be painted directly to the metal surface. It doesn't fish-eye like common paints will do if you try to spray it to bare metal.
(As read off the label)

"Dupli-Color METALCAST Anodized colors are formulated to work over properly prepared shiny bare metal, faux, chrome-like surfaces or METALCAST Ground Coat to provide a high gloss anodized look. METALCAST colors are heat resistant up to 500F. Oil and gas resistant. Ideal for valve covers, air cleaners, water pumps, calipers, and oil pans. Can be sprayed directly onto properly cleaned and sanded bare metal."

Funny, I didn't even read that when I bought it. :)
